Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw
The macaw with gold and blue is an incredibly beautiful bird. Its stunning appearance is well-known. Its sociable nature makes it a wonderful companion for families. It also excels in interaction and can learn phrases and tricks quickly.

Lolita's Personality
Macaws are a great companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds are ideally suited to families with a range of members. They can be bored quickly and find ways to keep themselves entertained when their owners aren't engaging with them enough often. Macaws that are not properly socialized can become aggressive and may even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw does not feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general, are active birds who are a joy to play with, interact with, and climb. They must spend at least 2 to 3-hours each day in the outdoors to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They love playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They also enjoy going to the playgrounds and parks while hiking, and also visiting local bars and restaurants. They are not only a great pet but they are also a great companion for children.
The birds can be quite loud, despite their affection for them. They can also be a nuisance to people living near. They can be heard making ear-splitting calls and screeches that could be disruptive to those living in apartments or condos.
This species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. This is why DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine the sex. Once sex has been determined pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to learn commands and phrases. This can be a long process and the owner must be patient and realize that this is a difficult task. The use of positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and help correct any behavior issues.
Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her hoped that Lolita would have a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to sea.
The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as an ancestor and plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary in Washington's west coast, where she could stay for the remainder of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita who has been alone at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. They include Ric O'Barry, who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

In the wild, a macaw that is well-fed can expect to live up to 60 years. In addition, this majestic bird needs plenty of room to move around and exercise.

The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they offer their killer whales, especially Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound in 1970, and while the species is endangered in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that many claim is too small for her.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is beautiful, however her health is declining. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare organizations who want to see her released into the wild. Lolita is a resident of the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was an attraction for tourists for a long time. She has battled chronic illnesses and an infection that has left in a fragile condition.

Despite the ongoing health issues there is a lot of hope that Lolita may be closer to living in the wild than ever before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to removing the whale of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.
After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a seaside sanctuary and she will be able to swim deep in the water and possibly even be reconnect with her orca mother. Sadly the plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal problem.
